so really we're talking an Xperia 1 Mini in the Xperia 5. So if we move onto hardware, one of the main differences is that the Xperia 5 has a smaller screen so we're down from 6.5 inches on the one it's a 6.1 inch on the Xperia 5. And we've also dropped from a 4k resolution to Full HD plus. Now the screen is still OLED so you're still getting those same punchy colors and great contrast but we've just got a slightly smaller one it's still got the same 21 by 9 aspect ratio. so, you've got that really wide screen effect which again will work with games like Fortnite.
And we've got the same USB C port and we've got the same cameras. So we've got a regular camera and ultra wide. I think the third one is a telephoto if we move on from hardware there's actually quite a few differences. When it comes to software because there's various camera features such as eye autofocus and that come with the Xperia 5. And support for dual shock 4 PlayStation controller where you can play Fortnite wirelessly. But all of these software features will come to the Xperia one eventually inside we've still got a Snapdragon 855 processor.
Design and Display
The design language used for the Xperia 1 is redeployed here for the Sony Xperia 5, with a tall, rectangular device that sports a 21:9 aspect ratio display.Sony has adopted the 21:9 aspect ratio because it believes that's an improved experience to offer further screen for watching videos or playing games. It first introduced the idea on the Xperia 1, and since a variety of competitors have copied the idea.
The screen on this device is a 6.1-inch Full HD+ (1080 x 2520) OLED in that aspect ratio, making it smaller than the Xperia 1. Despite how big that screen sounds on paper, the 21:9 aspect ratio does make it easier to hold in the hand.
This isn't as small as previous Sony Xperia Compact devices though, so if you were expecting a tight device that's suitable for smaller hands you'll likely want to try this out for yourself before you buy it.
The back of the phone is glass, and the device comes in either blue, back, grey or red. It's currently unclear what territories will get which colors, but it's the red particularly struck our eye as a unique shade.
It's also a notably light device in the hand at 164g, which you can't say the existing Xperia 1, while the Xperia 5's dimensions are 158 x 68 x 8.2mm making it shorter and narrower than its superior sibling.
There's a power button on the right hand side of the device, which includes the fingerprint scanner - making it easy to reach when it comes to unlocking.
The phone is also water resistant with a rating of IP68, so it should be able to survive the odd splash of water.
Overall, the Xperia 5 feels like a premium device that can match the Xperia 1 in its looks but it's unclear if this device will actually be easier for those who prefer smaller devices.
Performance
I encountered zero performance hiccups while using the Sony Xperia 5, which is exactly what you’d expect from a phone with Qualcomm’s almost-top-tier Snapdragon 855 chipset complimented by a plentiful 6GB of RAM.The Xperia 5 aced all our performance tests across the board. Notably, the phone hit 60fps on both GFXBench T-Rex and Manhattan tests across multiple tries.
Our overall performance testing score tied the Xperia 5 with the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, Asus Zenfone 6, and the newly released Huawei Mate 30 Pro. While it couldn’t challenge the top performers running the Snapdragon 855 Plus, it still managed to narrowly beat the Xperia 1 which suggests Sony has managed to eke a little more power out of the regular 855 SoC.
Gaming is also a breeze even if you avoid the pre-installed Game Enhancer app completely. The Xperia 5 also comes with 128GB of internal ROM and an optional microSD slot (up to 1TB), so storage isn’t an issue either if you’ve got a bunch of hefty 3D games.
Camera and Battery
Sony's triple 12MP camera is on the rear of this device, a similar affair to what we saw on the Xperia 1. It means you get the main wide-angle (f/1.6, 26mm) camera along with a super-wide snapper (f/2.4, 16mm) with a 130 degree field of view and a telephoto lens (f/2.4, 52mm) offering a 2x optical zoom and data for portrait mode. We've yet to be able to test this extensively, but this setup performed well on the Xperia 1 and we'd expect it to be a similar case on the Sony Xperia 5.
Sony has yet to offer any estimates on how long the battery will last on the Xperia 5, but we know it's a 3140mAh cell inside the phone. We'll be sure to push that to its limits at the time of our full review.

Essentially a shrunken version of the Xperia 1, this spiritual successor to the Xperia Compact line struggles to reconcile Sony's newfound obsession with tall phones and the smaller form factor. There are some bright spots with the display quality and overall performance, but its awkward design and painfully mediocre triple camera makes recommending the Xperia 5 a tall order.

- Comprehensive audio suite
Sony Xperia 5 Cons
